Arundathi Nag Biography
Arundathi Nag is a noted Indian actress who works in movies as well as theatre. She is a noted figure of Bollywood as well, though she works in south Indian movies most. In the Bollywood movie, Paa, she played the role of Vidya balan’s mother for which she won National award for best supporting actress. Same role gave her Star screen awards, Filmfare awards and numerous nominations as well. She received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Theatre Acting by Sangeet Natak Akademi in the year 2008. She was married to Kannada actor-director, Shankar Nag who died in a car accident at an age of 35. Arundathi is the founder and the Managing Trustee of the Sanket Trust. Noted Indian celebrity, Girish Karnad is its chairman. It runs the Ranga Shankara, a Bangalore theatre also.
Arundathi was born in Delhi. But later the family got shifted to Mumbai and she became active in theatre in Mumbai. It was during this time when she met her future husband, Shankar Nag. She was only 17 then. She joined an amateur theatre group in Mumbai and was so busy in her theatre work. She was active in Marathi, English, Hindi and Gujarati plays. After her marriage, she shifted to Bangalore with her husband. Shankar Nag became popular as an actor and director with Doordarshan serial, Malgudi days. She has also acted in his movie, Accident. In 1990, in a car accident he lost his life while Arundathi and their daughter were injured.
Later she became associated with Kannada cinema and has acted in Hindi and other south Indian languages as well. She has acted in Hindi movies like Ek Alag Mausam, Paa and Dil se. Most recently she appeared in Malayalam movie, Daa thadiya in grandmother’s role. She has also appeared as Mother Superior in Tamil movie, Minsara Kanavu. She has also worked as an assistant director in film industry.
