Bhabendra Nath Saikia Biography
Bhabendra Nath Saikia was an Assamese novelist, short story writer and film director. He owns the unique distinction of having won the National Awards for each of his seven Assamese films. He has received many awards including Sahitya Academy award and Padma Shri, for his contributions to literature, culture and cinema. Itihaas, Abartan, Sarothi, Sandhya Raag, Anirban, Agnisnaan and Kolahal are his noted Assamese movies and these movies have won Rajat Kamal award. sandhya Raag has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978. Antarip, Ramyabhumi and Atankar Shekhot are his published novels and Jeebon Britta, Jeebon Rekha and Mur hoishab, mur koishur are his autobiographies. Plays, essays, short stories, kids’ books and satire works are also included his collection. He has also edited Prantik, a monthly magazine, and Xaphura, a children's magazine. He has also served as the president of Jyoti Chitraban, the only film studio in Assam.
Bhabendra Nath Saikia was born on February 20, 1932 at Nagaon, Assam. He was an excellent student in studies and passed degree in the year 1952 with honours. His subject was physics. He took PG from Presidency College of Calcutta University. He took PhD from University of London in 1961 and a Diploma from the Imperial College of Science & Technology, London in 1961. He later served as reader in Physics at the Gauhati University and a Member, Sangeet Natak Akademi.
He is one among the top ranked writers from Assam. He had directed eight feature films. He has received National award for all these movies and these movies have been shown at different international film festivals also. A few of his noted plays include – Romyabhumi, Neelakontho, Deenabandhu, Aranyat Godhuli and Paramaananda and satire works are Kalpalukor Kahini and Xampadokor Kuthalit.
