Ceylon Manohar Biography
Ceylon Manohar is a pop singer and actor of yesterdays, best known for his popular song Surangani Surangani, which attained cult status in the 1970s in Tamil Nadu. He acted in Tamil, Sri Lankan Tamil and Bollywood films. He has also acted in television series - Athipookal, Thirumathi Selvam and Anjali. Though he is best known as a Sri Lankan pop singer, he has been associated with theater during his early days and also as a movie actor in the 1950s and 1960s. He has acted in more than 260 films belonging to 5 languages.
In 1964, he acted as hero in Sri Lankan Tamil movie - “Pasa Nila”. Manohar’s singing career began in the year 1970 in Colombo. Before that he was associated with theatre plays. He sang for Great Friends Enterprises. In 1972, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation appointed him as a Producer for Dramas in the commercial section, the same time when he concentrated towards pop music. He released songs in Tamil, English and Sinhalese languages. “Surangani” was released in 1973 which established him as a pop star and he received Pop Chakravarthi title at Jafna Music festival.
He carried his acting and singing career hand in hand and also busy conducting shows in many foreign countries. He acted in many Indian movies with leading stars like Sivaji Ganesan Rajnikanth, Kamalahasan and Dharmendra. He was also a contract singer for Hotel Breeze in Chennai during 1999-2000. He acted with Mammootty in 2006 movie, Thuruppu Gulaan. Manoharan was honoured with an Appreciation Award at Canadian Tamils Chamber of Commerce in 2006. “Virumbuhiren”, “Thoty Jeya”, “Jay Jay” , “Vaaliban”,”Kaathal Kaditham” and ”18 vayathil naan” are some of his Tamil movies.
