Chiranjeevi is an Indian film actor and a politician who has been working primarily in Telugu film industry. His film career spans more than three decades. He is popularly called Megastar by his fans. He has won many awards including 9 Filmfare South Awards and also has received the third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India for his excellence in film industry.
Chiranjeevi was born as Konidala Siva Sankara Vara Prasad on 22nd August 1955 in Mogalthur in West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. His father’s name is Konidela Venkata Rao and his mother’s name is Konidela Anjana Devi. He did his intermediate in C. S. R. Sharma College at Ongole and obtained his bachelor’s degree in commerce from Y.N. College in Narasapur. Then he came to Chennai and joined the Madras Film Institute in 1976. He took the screen name of Chiranjeevi to pay tribute to God Anjaneya.
He married Surekha, the daughter of Telugu actor Allu Rama Lingaiah on 20th February 1980 and has a son named Ram Charan Teja and two daughters Sushmita and Sreeja. He has two brothers Nagendra Baby and Pawan Kalyan and two sisters Vijaya Durga and Madhavi. His daughter Sushmita is married to Vishnu Prasad and Sreeja got married to Sirish Bharadwaj.
In 1978, he acted in a small role in the film Punadi Rallu when he was still a student of the film institute. After he completed his course he got some small and villain roles in films. In the end of 1979, he was becoming popular slowly.
He was in great heights in eighties and nineties. Some of his important films include Punadhirallu, Punnami Naagu, Nakili Manishi, 47 Naatkal, Khaidi, Vijetha, Swayam Krushi, Rudraveena, Aradhana, Prathibandh, Gang Leader, Aapathbandavudu, Muta Mesthri, Sneham Kosam, Indra, Shankar Dada MBBS, Stalin, Challenge, Bavagaru Bagunnara, Athaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogudu, etc.
Chiranjeevi is also a philanthropist and founded the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust on 2nd October 1998. A blood bank and eye banks are maintained by this trust. The Andhra Pradesh State Government awarded the trust, the Best Voluntary Blood Bank Award for the year 2002 and 2003. More than 3.5 lakh people have pledged their eyes to this foundation.
Chiranjeevi has received many awards and honors including Padma Bhushan Award and honorary doctorate degree by Andhra University in 2006. He has won Filmfare awards 7 times and Nandi Awards 4 times.
He entered active politics in 2008 and founded Praja Rajyam Party. He was elected as the member of the state assembly from Tirupati constituency in 2009 elections. This is the third largest party in Andhra Pradesh.
