Cochin Haneefa Biography
Cochin Haneefa is the stage name of Indian film actor, director and screenwriter Mohammed Haneefa. His acting career spanned over 4 decades and has acted in more than 300 films. Though he had acted in a number of villain roles, he is considered to be one of the best comedians of Malayalam film industry.
He was born on 22nd April 1951 in Kochi in Kerala. His parents are Kochi Velthedathu tharavattil A. B. Muhammed and Hajira. He studied at St. Augustine School and at St. Albert’s College and got his degree in botany. He was a member of the comedy troupe Cochin Kalabhavan and his film debut was in 1972 through the film Azhimukham by Vijayan.
He has acted more than 80 films in Tamil language including some popular films like Mahanadi with Kamal Hassan, Madrasa Patnam with Arya, Sivaji and Enthiran with Rajini. He produced a Malayalam film Valtsalyam and he played memorable roles in some films that include Mannar Mathai Speaking, Kireedam, Swapnakoodu, Devaasuram, etc.
He has directed nearly 20 films that include Oru Sindoora Pottinte Ormaykku, Moonnu Masangalkku Munpu, Oru Sandesam Koodi, Pasa Paravaigal, Pillai Pasam, vasaliley Oru Vennila, Naalai Engal Kalyanam, etc. and his last Malayalam film was Bodyguard in 2010. He got Kerala State Second Best Actor award for the film Soothradharan in 2001.
Some of his films are Mukunthetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu, Kireedam, Chenkol, Kala Pani, Superman, Hitler, Lelam, Aniyathi Pravum, Punjabi House, Mailpeelikkavu, Njan Gandharvan, Pathram, The Truth, Megham, Friends, Dada Sahib, Rakshasa Rajavu, Dubai, Soothradharan, Kakkakuyil, Meesa Madhavan, Kasthooriman, Thilakkam, Bamboo Boys, Kaiyethum Doorath, Loudspeaker, Thuruppu Gulan, Keerthi Chakra, etc.
He married Fasila and has twin daughters Safa and Marwa. He died of liver cancer and multiple organ failure on 2nd February 2010 in Chennai at his age of 58.
