Daggubati Purandeswari Biography
Daggubati Purandeswari is a leading politician from Andhra Pradesh, who was a member of 15th Lok sabha. Fondly called Southern Sushma Swaraj, she served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resource Development and later Minister of State Commerce and Industry (2012-2014). She is the daughter of idol matinee and leading politician - N. T. Rama Rao and Basavatarakam. She had 11 siblings of whom Nandamuri Ramakrishna Sr died young. Nandamuri Harikrishna and Nandamuri Balakrishna are noted film actors. Her nephews – Jr NTR, Taraka Ratna and Nandamuri Kalyan Ram are also popular actors of Tollywood. She is married to Daggubati Venkateswara Rao, a former member of the Indian National Congress.
She was born in Chennai on 22 April 1959. She schooled from Sacred Heart Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai. After graduation, she took a short course in gemology at the Gemological Institute of India and established Hyderabad Institute of Gem and Jewellery later. She is also trained in classical dance form – Kuchipudi. But later she followed her father’s steps and joined politics. She was associated with Indian National Congress then.
First associated with state politics, in 2004 she became a parliamentarian as a member of Indian National Congress. She delivered her maiden speech in Lok Sabha in 2004 about the situation of agriculture in the country, which stumped the members. She was praised by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar the way she perfectly narrated the problems of farmers in her address. Later she received best Parliamentarian title for 2004-05 by Asian Age. This politician is known for her debates on various bills such as 'Domestic Violence Bill and Hindu Succession Bill. She is currently appointed in-charge of BJP Mahila Morcha since July 2015.
