Jahor Roy Biography

Jahor Roy was a popular comedian of Bengali cinema yesterdays. He is most known for his comedy films with Bhanu Bandyopadhyay. He worked as a supporting actor in character roles. Yet he has been frequently used in movies by directors to add comedy elements to serious plots. Scripts were written in such a way that Roy can be incorporated into it. He was born on September 19, 1919 in Barishal, Present Bangladesh In 1936, he passed Matriculation from Narkeldanga High School he had completed his IA from B.N.College of Patna in 1938.  He entered Bengali cinema long back in the era of 1940’s discontinuing his studies. He was active in the industry till middle 1970’s and passed away on August 11, 1977 in Kolkata. His most memorable roles are Dhonny Meye, Chadmabeshi and Bhanu Goenda Jahor Assistant.

 

Roy's first major film role was Purbarag directed by Ardhendu Mukherjee, released in the year 1947. It was followed by Anjangarh (1948) directed by Bimal Roy. He has worked with all leading Bengali film directors including Bimal Roy, Ardhendu Mukherjee, Tapan Sinha, Ritwik Ghatak, Nirmal Dey, Tarun Majumdar, Purnendy Roychowdhury, Arabinbo Mukherjee, Agradoot, Haridas Bhattacharya, Ajoy Kar and Satyajit Ray.

 

Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne was one of the critically well acclaimed movies in which Roy played a meaty role. In this Satyajit Ray film, he played the role of a crooked war-mongering minister of an innocent and peace-loving king. His brief appearance in Ritwik Ghatak's autobiographical film Jukti Takko Aar Gappo, towards the end of his career and Satyajit Ray‘s Parash Pathar also need special mention. Other noted works of Roy include - Sharey Chuattar, Palatak, Subarnarekha, Ulka, Rajlakshmi O Srikanta, Kal Tumi Aleya, Nayika Sangbad, Abhaya O Srikanta, Bari Theke Paliye, Nisha padma, Bhanu Goenda Jahor Assistant, Atal Jaler Ahwan, Upahar, Chhadmabeshi, Dhonny Meye, Jamalaye Jibanta Manush and Dashyumohan.
