Karan Johar Biography
Karan Johar is an Indian film director of Hindi film industry who is also a producer, screenwriter and costume designer. He belongs to the filmy background and his father is a famous film producer. He owns the production company Dharma Productions. He is noted for producing and directing very successful films.
Karan Johar was born on 25th May 1972 in Mumbai in Maharashtra as Karan Dharma Kama Johar. His father is Yash Johar and his mother is Hiroo Johar. He did his schooling at Greenlawns High School and then joined H.R. College of Commerce and Economics to complete his graduation. He then got Master’s degree in French. He was interested in cinema industry from his young age and entered the field as an actor in the film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
He had some faith in numerology and named all his films at the initial stage in K series like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. But after seeing the success of the movie Lage Raho Munna Bai he stopped this practice.
He designed costumes for Shahrukh Khan in many films like Dil To Pagal Hai, Duplicate, Mohabbatein, Main Hoon Na, Veer Zaara and Om Shanti Om. He made his entry as a director through the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 when he was just 25 and also showed his talents by writing story and screenplay for it. This film won his national award and 8 Filmfare awards and turned to be the highest grosser of the year.
After the death of his father, he started producing films under his father’s banner Dharma Productions. He produced many films through that including Kal Ho Naa Ho, Wake Up Sid, We Are Family, I Hate Luv Storys, etc.
He also worked as a television host and became the host of the show Koffee With Karan and in that interviewed many popular celebrities of Hindi film industry. This was a very successful program and lasted for 25 episodes and has seen three seasons.
Some of his films include Kaal, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kurbaan, My Name is Khan, I Hate Luv Storys, Dostana, Wake Up Sid, We Are Family, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Agneepath, Main Hoon Na, Home Delivery: Aapko… Ghar Tak, Alag, Salaam-e-Ishq, Om Shanti Om, Fashion, Luck by Chance, etc.
The World Economic Forum 2006 selected him as one of the 250 Global Young Leaders in 2007. In the Miss World competition conducted in Warsaw in Poland on 30th September 2006, he enjoyed the privilege of being the first Indian filmmaker to be a jury member.
