Kpac Lalitha Biography

KPAC Lalitha is a film actress and theatre artist of Malayalam. In the career spanning to more than 40 years, she has given numerous characters to film lovers. She is one among the most versatile supporting actresses of Malayalam and now she is most popular for portraying mother and grandmother roles. During 1990’s, along with comedy king, Innocent she has given new dimensions to humour and people have always loved to see their onscreen chemistry. KPAC Lalitha is the wife of versatile film maker of Malayalam, Late. Bharathan. Her son has also entered film stream as an actor and he is interested in working behind camera rather than working in front of it.

KPAC Lalitha is the screen name of actress Maheshwari Amma. She was born in Ramapuram near Kayamkula, Alappuzha as the daughter of Kadaykatharayil Veettil K. Ananthan Nair and Bhargavi Amma. She had her formal training in dance under the tutelage of Kalamandalam Gangadharan. She started her career as a theatre artist at the age of 10 and later she joined KPAC (a popular drama Arts club). During 60’s and 70’s, it was the live era of drama and people loved them equally as movies. KPAC is always regarded as the most popular theater group and she became a popular stage actress as well.  She was given the screen name Lalitha. As there was already an actress with the name Lalitha, later she came to be known as KPAC Lalitha,that she still carries along with her.

Her first movie was the film adaptation of her K.P.A.C. play Koottukudumbam. Swayamvaram and Anubhavangal paalichakal were well acclaimed movies of Lalitha at a younger age. She has worked as the heroine opposite Prem Nazeer and Bharat Gopi during this time. Kodiyettam opposite Gopi needs special mention. She married director Bharathan in the year 1978 and took a temporary break from industry. When she returned back, she did the roles of mother, sister, supporting actress etc that she continues till now.

She has won National award for supporting actress twice – Amaram and Shantham. She acted as Vijayan’s (Football player) mother in the movie Shantham. She has won Kerala state awards for supporting actress four times and Asianet awards three times.
