Lenin Rajendran Biography

Lenin Rajendran is a script writer and director of Malayalam movies. He is always known for realistic themes and art movies. He has less concentrated on commercial movies till now. He is one of the major directors of Malayalam cinema who has given many award winning movies to Malayalam. His prominent movies are Mazha, Ratri mazha, Venal, Anyar, Daivathinte vikrithikal, Swathi Tirunal, Vachanam, Kulam and Makara manju. His movie, Edavappathy (Middle of month Edavam – literally meaning beginning of monsoon season) will be released very soon. It stars Manisha Koirala in the leading role, who has fought back against ovarian cancer.

He began his film-making career as an assistant to director P. A. Backer. As an independent director his first movie was venal released in the year 1982. During 80’s, he gave importance to both commercial and offbeat movies equally. Prem nazirne kaanmaanilla (Prem Nazir is missing) is a commercial movie directed by Lenin which starred Prem Nazir in leading role. He was an active communist during middle 80’s and his 1985 film Meenamasithile Sooryan was about the anti-feudal upheaval of the 1940s in Kerala from a Communist viewpoint.

He is the director of musical and critically acclaimed movie Swathi thirunal released in the year 1987. This movie marked the beginning of actress Ranjini and Kannada super star Anand Naag played Swathi thirunal’s role in this movie. From there on, he began to view films seriously giving importance to realistic aspects. In 1994 he made critically well acclaimed Daivathinte Vikrithikal that won many National awards as well. He won first state awards for the same. In 1997, his movie Kulam won most popular movie at state awards.

But it was actually the movie, Mazha released in the year 2000 which brought him to limelight. This movie was an adapted screenplay of Madhavi kutty’s Nashtapetta Neelambhari. It paired Samyukta varma and Biju Menon for the first time onscreen and their chemistry was well noted. Later they worked together in many movies and got married as well. Now he is busy with the project, Edavapathi that’s expected to release 2013.
