Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Biography
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is an Indian politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a prominent figure of his party and also a parliamentarian associated with state and national level politics. He entered Rajya Sabha in 2016 and was inducted to Modi’s cabinet later. He currently serves as minister of Minority Affairs. He serves this position since 3 September 2017. He has earlier served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of State (Independent Charge) Minority Affairs before the reshuffle, and also held the same portfolio of Minority Affairs during 2014-2016. Naqvi has published three books since 1991.
He was born on 15 October 1957 into a Muslim family at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. AH Naqvi and Sakina Begum are his parents. He married a Hindu lady, Seema Naqvi in 1983 and has one son. He was involved in student politics during mid-1970s, and got jailed during Emergency period. He was then associated with Janata Party. He contested state assembly elections for the first time in 1980, representing Janata Party (Secular), but couldn’t make it. He also unsuccessfully contested 1980 Lok Sabha elections from the Ayodhya constituency as an independent candidate.
He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time when he contested 1998 general elections. He served as Minister of State for Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He got elected to Rajya Sabha in 2016, and currently serves as a cabinet minister in Narendra Modi led government. Though he belongs to Muslim community, he disapproves campaign started by Congress party to prevent Muslims from joining BJP. He also feels that Muslims won't desert other Muslims if they are given important posts in the ruling BJP party.
