Munin Barua Biography
Munin Barua was a filmmaker belonging to Assamese cinema. He lived during the period 5 November 1946 – 7 April 2018. He is credited for paving way for a new era in the Assamese film industry with his film Hiya Diya Niya which became a blockbuster in year 2000. Pita-Putro, Dinabandhoo, Prabhati Pokhir Gaan, Daag, Nayak and Bidhata are other major works as a director. His film Dinabandhoo received National award for best regional film in Assamese in the year 2005. National Film Award winning Assamese director Barua passed away in 2018 at 72.
Munin Barua, fondly called as Bhaimon Da was born on 5 November 1946 in Golaghat, Assam. He was born as the youngest son to Hemendra Nath Barua and his wife Latika Barua. He married Manjula Barua, an actress and cstume designer from Jorhat in 1974. The couple has two children. He started his professional career as a scriptwriter and assistant director of Assamese films in mid-70's. He scripted 21 movies in total. Some of his famous film scripts are Sewali, Daag, Barood, Bowari, Ghar-Sansar, Sonmoina, Maya, Mon-Mandir, Rong, Bidhata etc.
The celebrated filmmaker was a well-known name in the Assamese film industry. He worked as an assistant director to Shiva Prasad Thakur for many years. As a full-fledged film director, his first movie was Pratima released in 1987. After that he directed more than a dozen of Assamese movies, which include many award winning and commercial hit movies. Priyar Priyo in 2017 was his last release. His 2001 release Nayak received State Award for Best Director while Barood in 2003 received best film award. Dinabandhoo in 2004 earned him national award. He was awarded Life Time Achievement Award 2017 by Prag Cine Awards for his contribution towards Assamese cinema.
