Mushtaq Kak Biography

Mushtaq Kak is an acclaimed theatre artist from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He has directed around 100 plays till now, and many of them were award winners. He is also an acclaimed stage actor, and has been a part of several hit plays since 1990s. He owns a theatre troupe in Kashmir named, ‘Amateur Theatre group’, and he also directs plays for Shri Ram Centre, New Delhi where he serves as artistic director. As a film actor, he played the meaty role of the lead villain in Bollywood film, Hijack, and was most recently seen in a brief role in John Abraham starrer spy thriller, Romeo Akbar Walter, released in 2019.

 

Mushtaq Kak was born to a Dogra mother and a Kashmiri Muslim father, in Jammu and Kashmir. He grew up in Kashmir, where he established his career as a theatre artist. His artistic tastes and interests were supported by his parents. As a playwright and director he has been associated with the prestigious Shri Ram Centre of Performing Arts, Delhi for many years. He has directed many award winning plays like Maha Brahmin, Malika, Pratibimb, Andha Yug and Alladad. Though he has created a niche of his own in Kashmiri theatre, he is only a seasonal actor in Bollywood. He has also acted in a Hollywood movie, “Amal”

 

He got drawn towards the world of acting while he was a school student at Alexander Memorial School, Srinagar. One of his roles in children’s plays encouraged him to take up more acting roles, and later to pursue a career in this field. His first play, “Aadhi raat ke baad” was a flop. But it gave him a learning experience. His play, “Deviani”, a mythological story depicting war between gods and demons was his first hit play.
