Nitin Chandrakant Desai Biography
Nitin Chandrakant Desai is a noted art director and production designer of Bollywood. His best movies as an art director include – Lagaan (2001), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Devdas (2002) and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). He has an extra talent to project film sets based on traditional designs. The movies noted above are the best instances. He has won National Film Award for Best Art Direction four times, and Filmfare Best Art Direction Award three times. In 2005, he opened his "ND Studio" s spread over 52 acres which is used for film shooting as well as reality show on colors, Big Boss. Nitin received National awards for the movies - Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan and Devdas. He has won Filmfare awards for the movies, Devdas, 1942: A love story and Khamoshi.
Born in Mumbai, Nitin studied photography at the J.J. School of Art and L.S.Raheja school of arts, in Mumbai. He joined Mumbai's Film City Studios in May 1987 and moved to 3D format of art direction. Later he worked as assistant to Nitish Roy and Govind Nihalani. He has also worked as assistant director of television serials like Kabir and first 25 episodes of Chanakya. From 26th episode onwards, he directed independently. His first movie was Bhookamp, released in 1993. But the first noticed movie was 1942: A love story, released one year later. He won Filmfare awards for best art direction also. Thus began the successful journey of Nitin.
He also created two sets for Slumdog Millionaire – Oscar winning movie. It included the set of Kaun Banega Crorepati scene which he had earlier done for Kaun banega crorepathi program on Star Plus and the second set was Taj Mahal. Nitin has also won IIFA awards for Jodha Akbar and Star screen awards for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1942: A love story, Josh, Lagaan, Gandhi: My father and Khamoshi.
