P. V. Narasimha Rao Biography
P.V. Narasimha Rao was born on 28th June, 1921 at Laknepally village in Warangal District of Andhra Pradesh. His original name was Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao. His parents are P. Ranga Rao and Rukminiamma. He was the ninth Prime Minister of India. He studied at Osmania University and later he finished his higher degree in law at Fergusson College which is now called as University of Pune. His mother tongue was Telugu. He could speak eight Indian languages. Apart from this he learned many international languages like English, French, Arabic, Spanish, German, Greek, Latin and Persian.
P.V. Narasimha Rao was an advocate and agriculturalist before he entered politics. He was an energetic freedom fighter at the time of India’s Independence movement. Then he entered into fulltime politics and became a member in Indian National Congress. He served as a cabinet Minister in Andhra Pradesh between 1962 and 1971. Later he became the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh from 1971 - 1973. During the time of split in Indian National Congress in 1969, he stayed loyal to Indira Ghandhi. He served in the cabinets of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, he was invited to head the Congress. In 1991, Congress won the majority in the parliament and he was elected as a Prime minister of India. He won a great victory as a Member of Parliament at Nandyal of Andhra Pradesh at a difference of five lakh votes. This victory was recorded in Guinness Book of World Records.
He made many revolutions to improve Indian economy. The major goals set by him were removing fiscal deficit, increasing investment in infrastructure and privatization of the public sector. He made some regulatory changes in foreign direct investment. He introduced the SEBI act in 1992 and Security Law to regulate all the security market intermediaries. He introduced computer based trading systems in National Stock Exchange.
During his period he faced many challenges like Babri mosque demolition related riots, Punjab separatist movement and Kashmir separatist movement which were handled by him successfully. His government launched an act against terrorism called Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) to handle terrorism. At general election in 1996 Rao’s congress party was badly defeated by Bharadiya Janatha Party. He died on 23rd December 2004 at the age of 83. Still now, many of the reforms made by him are praised and followed by Indian government.
