Pooja Umashankar is an Indian film actress who concentrates in South Indian film industry. She is considered to be a talented actress and has won many awards for her acting skills. She has appeared in films of Malayalam, Tamil and Sinhala languages.
Pooja was born on 25th June 1981 in Colombo in Sri Lanka. Her mother’s name is Sandhya and her father’s name is Uma Shankar. Her mother is a Sri Lankan Sinhalese and her father is an Indian Kannadiga Brahmin from Sringeri in Chikmagalur District of Karnataka.
Her father was a manager at the Hindustan Unilever at Valparai. Pooja completed her schooling at Baldwin School and finished her higher studies at the Mount Carmel College in Bangalore where she got her master’s degree in business and management. She is capable of speaking many languages like Kannada, Sinhalese, Tamil and English. She got converted to Christianity.
Pooja wanted to enter the film industry as an actress. But her father did not like her choice and so she could not get the support from her family at the initial stage. She was introduced to director Jeeva by her friend and her debut movie was in Tamil named Ullam Ketkumae. Due to lack of family support, she actually wanted to do this film and then go back to her original job and not take acting as her career.
As the film Ullam Ketkumae was delayed she committed another film Jay Jay which was released first and became her official film debut. She got positive reviews for her performance in this film and appeared in many more films.
She acted in many Sinhala films like Anjalika, Asai Mang Piyabanna, Yahaluvo, Suwanda Denuna Jeewithe and Kusa-Paba. She became a household name in the Sinhala film industry and many of her films became blockbusters. The film Kusa Paba became the highest grosser in the history of Sinhala films.
Some of her other films include Jay Jay, Attahasam, Ullam Ketkumae, Githan, Pattiyal, Thambi, Thagapansamy, Pori, Panthaya kozhi, Oram Po, Naan Kadavul, Drohi, Orange, etc. She also acted in the short films in English named Mirage and Smoking Kills. She appeared in as one of the judges in the reality dance program in Kalaignar TV and Sun TV, Aattam Paattam Kondaattam. She was a part of the stage show by Mani Ratnam, Netru, Indru, Naalai.
