Poornima who was also known as Sushma Shrestha in her childhood days is a popular playback singer of Bollywood. As a child, her best song is ‘Jaane tu ya jaane na’ of Aa gale lag jaa. The music was given by R.D.Burman and she became the youngest nominee of best playback singer in Filmfare awards too. Her next most remembered songs are ‘Hein naa bolo bolo’ and ‘Kya hua tera wada’. As adult, her best songs are Sona kitna sona hai of Hero no.1 and Hu tu tu, Biwi no.1 title song, Mein hoon gaon ki gori of Bol Radha Bol. Her voice has been most commonly used for the sedative tunes of the movies of 90’s like Chathri na khol barsat mein and Bathiyan na bujha of Gopi Kishan. She is a noted Nepali singer who sings for Hindi and Marathi movies as well. She is most noted for her sweet and well tuned voice and her voice has been most used for Karishma Kapoor and Juhi Chawla during 90’s.
Born as the daughter of music composer Bholanath, she was a known face in Bollywood since early 70’s. She sang ‘Hai na bolo’ of Andaz (R.D.Burman composition) when she was just 9 and stuck a series of hit songs with R.D like Yaadom ki baarat title song, Mera tujhse hai pehla tha, Kya hua tera wada and hai na bolo bolo. It’s for these 4 songs, that the name Sushma Shrestha is remembered most. Hai na bolo was her first song and that song was recorded in 1969, along with Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur. She also has done a child album titled ‘Bal Geet’ and before her career was launched in an organized function, her father passed away due to cardiac arrest. Young Sushma was just 11 years old that time.
After marriage she quit singing for a short while as opportunities were dried up. She became interested in doing jingles this time. During early 90’s when she was approached by Tips audio company. As they suggested, she changed her name to get over her child image. It became successful too. Her songs like ‘Barsat mein’ of Maa and songs of Bol Radha Bol became huge hits. Her other hits songs include ‘Chane ki khet mein’ of Anjaam, ‘Aaj kal ki ladkiyan’ of Chal mere bhai and ‘Tu mere dil mein bas jaa’ of Judwaa.
