R. L. Bhatia Biography
R. L. Bhatia is an Indian politician who served as parliamentarian as well as governor of two Indian states, Kerala and Bihar. His full name is Raghunanthanlal Bhatia. He hailed from Amritsar, Punjab. He represented Indian National Congress. He was a Lok Sabha member for 6 terms representing Amritsar. He took the charge of Kerala governor following the demise of Sikander Bakht who was serving that position. He took over the power from T. N. Chaturvedi who was given an additional power. He served as the Governor of Kerala from 23 June 2004 to 10 July 2008, followed by Governor of Bihar from 10 July 2008 to 28 June 2009.
R. L. Bhatia hails from Amritsar. He was born to Arooramal Bhatia and Lal Devi Bhatia. He completed his graduation as well as LLB from University of the Punjab in Lahore in the undivided India. He was associated with regional politics of Amritsar before he rose to prominent powers within the party. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1972 representing Amritsar constituency. Since then he got re-elected to the Lok Sabha from the same constituency at the 1980, 1985, 1992, 1996 and 1999 elections.
He was a member of the executive committee of Congress parliamentary party from 1975 to 1977. When he got elected to Lok Sabha in 1992 general elections, he served as Minister of State for External Affairs. After that he held many prominent positions within the party in the national level. As a parliamentarian Bhatia also got opportunity to represent India as a delegate to the United Nations. Currently he has retired from active politics and leading a peaceful life.
