R. P. N. Singh Biography
Kunwar Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh, shortly called R. P. N. Singh is a noted politician and former cabinet minister associated with Indian National Congress. He served as the Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha. He represented Indian National Congress at Kushinagar (Padrauna Sadar) constituency. He was also a former MLA from the seat of Padrauna. Singh has also served as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs of India. In 2014 general elections he lost his MP seat to Rajesh pandey of Bharatiya Janata Party by over 30,000 votes.
He was born into a political family of Delhi on 25 April 1964. He is the son of prominent politician and cabinet minister of Indira Gandhi’s ministry, Kunwar C. P. N. Singh who was earlier elected from Kushinagar constituency. C. P. N. Singh was a prominent Congress leader in the 1970s and 1980s. R. P. N. Singh is married to leading journalist and media personality, Sonia Singh who currently serves as the editorial director and president of the NDTV ethics committee. They got married in 2002, and the couple has three daughters. Singh completed his schooling from Doon School. In 2014 he became the president of Doon's alumni body.
R. P. N. Singh joined active politics in the 1990s, and he became an MLA for the first time in 1996. He served as an MLA of UP during the period, 1996-2009 before he got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 2009. He served as the Union Minister of State, Road, Transport and Highways 2009-2012 in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. However in 2014 general elections he lost his MP seat, when BJP swept the whole nation. He serves as a secretary of Udit Narain Degree College, Inter College and also the Trust.
