Raj Babbar Biography

Raj Babbar is a Parliamentarian from Firozabad. He has also worked in many Bollywood movies as well as Punjabi since 1977. His sons Arya Babbarand Prateik Babbar, born of two marriages have also debut in Bollywood. He was married to Nadira and Smita Patel and later returned back to Nadira after the death of Smita Patel. He has done the role of hero, anti hero and supporting actor in his movies.

Born in Uttar Pradesh, he completed his acting course in National school of Drama at Agra. He also did a training program in the Method school of acting at NS before joining Drama and movies. His debut movie was comic flick ‘Kissa kursi ka’ in 1977 opposite Shabana Azmi. But the whole prints were burned due to controversies regarding the politicians and was not passed by censor board. So, the movie Asha in 1980 can be regarded as his debut movie though Jeetendra played the main role. But offers came pouring in with the success of ‘Insaaf ki tarazu’ in 1980. Though he was casted as a rapist in the movie, he won a Filmfare nomination as well as numerous offers in Bollywood. Surprisingly he got main hero roles most. He was one among the most sought heroes of 1980’s. He did both off-beat movies as well as commercial movies. Reena Roy is his first heroine if we consider the released movies.

He has acted in numerous movies during 1980’s of which his performance in movies like Insaaf ti tarazu, Aaj ki awaz, Lava, Nikah, Mirch masala and Prem Geet were appreciated most. He achieved success in Punjabi movies as well. Movies like Chann Pardesi, Long ka lashkara and Aasra pyar ka are a few such hits. Despite being married to Nadira Zaheer, he got romantically involved with his co-actress Smita Patel with whom he worked in Bheegi palkein, Anand aur Anand, Thajurba and Mirch masala. They had to face opposition from media as well as from family and society, when they got married each other.
