Rajesh Khanna Biography
Rajesh Khanna was an Indian actor and film producer who served as the member of the Indian Parliament from 1991 to 1996. His acting career had spread over four decades and he had acted in more than 160 films. He started to act in films since 1966.
He was born on 29th December 1942 in Amritsar in Punjab. His birth name was Jatin Khanna. He was given adoption and was brought up by his foster parents. He studied at St. Sebastian’s Goan High School in Girgaum. He was the school mate and family friend of the film actor Jeetendra. He was interested in acting since his school days and took part in the plays enacted on the school stage. He joined Kishinchand Chellaram College.
His close friends used to call him Kaka. He was dating Anju Mahendru for seven years and this relationship did not end in marriage. He married Dimple Kapadia in 1973 and has two daughters Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna. He and his wife were separated in 1984. The name Rajesh Khanna was given to him by his uncle.
He won the All India Talent Contest in 1965 organized by United Producers and Filmfare. His debut film was Aakhri Khat in 1966 and soon he climbed the ladder to become the first super star of Hindi film industry. He acted in many commercially successful hits. Some of the films that he has acted include Khamoshi, The Train, Sachaa Jhutha, Kati Patang, Anand, Dushman, Amar Prem, Bawarchi, Namak Haraam, Avishkaar, Prem Nagar, Roti, Amar Deep, Thodisi Bewafaii, Alag Alag, Khudai, etc.
He produced and co-produced some films like Alag Alag, Jai Shiv Shankar, Police Ke Peeche Police, Mehboob Ki Mehndi, Roti, etc. He has sung songs as playback singer in the films Baharon Ke Sapne, Raja Rani, Daag, Amar Prem, Ajnabee, etc.
He was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Awards fourteen times and won the awards three times. He also has received BFJA Awards for Best Actor four times. In the year 2005 he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
He died on 18 July 2012 at his bungalow Aashirwad, in Mumbai due to Kidney problems.
