Ramana Reddy Biography

Ramana Reddy was a popular comedian of Telugu cinema who predominantly worked in the era of 1950s to 1970s. Noted industrialist and politician - T. Subbarami Reddy is his nephew. Made his film debut in the year 1951 with the film - Manavathi directed by Y. V. Rao, he stayed in the industry till mid-1970s till his death. He also learned the art of magic while portraying the role of a magician in the film - Akka Chellelu (1957). David in Missamma, Karanam in Rojulu Marayi, Chinnamaya in Mayabazar and Kanchu Gantayya in Gundamma Katha are his most memorable roles onscreen. He died on November 11, 1974.

 

His full name is Thikkavarapu Venkata Ramana Reddy. His surname is “Thikkavarapu”. He was born in Jagadevi Peta of Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh in the year 1921. He worked as a sanitary inspector before joining film industry. Manavathi directed by Y. V. Rao marked his film debut at the age of 30. Since then he is known for his screen presence as a comedian in the 1950s and 1960s and he shared screen space with N. T. Rama Rao and A.N.R in numerous films. He also learnt magic for the portrayal of a magician for the movie Akka Chellelu. Later he used to perform magic at various voluntary organizations to collect fund for some good cause.

 

He partnered with legendary actors like Relangi Venkata Ramaiah, Girija and Suryakantham to give some iconic comedy scenes of Telugu celluloid which still entertain audience. He was active in the film industry till his death. Cheekati Velugulu (1975) - his last film was released posthumously. He also played supporting roles onscreen.
