Rohini Biography

Rohini is a South Indian actress, lyricist, screenwriter, voice actor and director. She was most successful in Malayalam and Tamil movies during 80’s.  She started her career at the age of 5 and she has about 130 south Indian films to her credit.  For the Telugu movie Shtree, released in the year 1996 she received state award as well as National awards special mention. She is also a popular dubbing artist in the Tamil industry. She has worked for 6 Mani Ratnam movies. She has lent her voices to Aishwarya Rai for the movies Iruvar and Raavanan, Jyothika for Kamal Hassan movie Vettayadu vilayudu and Manisha Koirala for Bombay. She was given the "Kalaimamani" Award most recently for her contributions to Tamil cinema. Earlier she was married to actor Raghuvaran and they divorced in the year 2004.

She has also worked as a lyricist for the movie, Pachaikili Muthucharam and has even written songs for the album - Maalai Pozhudhin Mayakathilaey. She also writes scripts for Tamil serials since 1996. She is a successful TV anchor also. Azhagiya Tamizh Magal on Kalaignar TV  and Rohini’s Box Officeof Raj TV are her most popular TV programs.  Being an activist for AIDS awareness, Rohini has also directed short films.

Rohini was born in Anakapally, Andhra Pradesh in the year 1968 and she spent her childhood days at Chennai. She is the sister of famous Telugu TV artiste, Balaji. She started her career in 1976 as a child artist at the age of 5 and the movie was Yashoda Krishna, a Telugu film. Her other Telugu movies as a child artist were Bhakta Kannappa, Laxmi Pooja and Nyayam Kavali. She debut Malayalam in the year 1982 with critically well acclaimed movie Kakka. Till then she has been active in Malayalam industry and has given numerous hits. As a young artist or college girl, she was most successful with her co-star Rahman.

Her major Malayalam movies are CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed., Sundarimare sookshikkuka, Ladies Only, Bandhukkal Sathrukkal, Mithya, Ezhunnallathu, Agnipravesham, Achuvettante veedu, Vrutham, Rareeram, Adiverukal, Ponnum Kudthinum Pottu, Love story, Aarodum paraye, Parannu Parannu Parannu, Abhayam Thedi, Koodanayum kaattu, Ee Lokam Ivide Kure Manushya, Dhinarathrangal, Dwani and January Oru Orma.

She has also acted in Aamir Khan – Kushboo starrer Bollywood movie Jawani Zindabad in the year 1990. Her best Tamil movies are Thamara Bharani, Thanthu Vitten Ennai, Pavunu Pavunuthan and Magalir Mattum.
