S. D. Subbulakshmi Biography
S. D. Subbulakshmi was a singing actress in the early era of film talkies. She was the second wife of noted film maker of silent era, K. Subramaniam. Abaswaram Ramji is the son born in this wed-lock. She is most known for introducing the legendary vocalist and playback singer, M. S. Subbulakshmi to Tamil cinema as well as friends’ circles. She started her career as a child artist and was a noted theatre artist too, before entering movies. ‘Pavalakkodi’ directed by K. Subramaniam marked her film debut in 1934 and became one of the leading heroines of 1930’s. With mid-1940’s she switched on to mother and character roles. She was associated with cinema as a producer till the end of her life.
Subbulakshmi was born in Srivaikundam to Duraisamy and Janaki Ammal. Her full name is Srivaikundam Duraisamy Subbulakshmi and she entered Tamil drama as a child artist. She was paired opposite another debutant M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavather in her debut movie, ‘Pavalakkodi’ directed by her future husband, K. Subramaniam. This movie marked the career beginning of this great director too. Actually, Pavalakkodi was a play with Subbulakshmi and Bhagavather in the lead roles. R. M. Alagappa Chettiar and K. Subramaniam watched this stage play together and decided to produce this movie, retaining the leading pair. This single movie made her a famous and established actress. As a stage actress too, she earned fame and has worked with leading artists like M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, K. B. Sundarambal and T. R. Mahalingam.
She married film director K. Subramaniam with the consent of his wife and a son was born to them. K. Subramaniam kept both the relations together till the end of his life. Engirundho Vandhaal, released in 1970 was the last movie acted by S. D. Subbulakshmi.
