S. J. Surya Biography 
S. J. Surya is a film director, writer, actor, and producer of Tamil film industry. His real name is Justin Selvaraj Samanasu Pandian (S. Justin Selvaraj). He is known for directing many block buster movies of Tamil. In 2000, he placed Jyothika as the top actress of Tamil cinema through the movie, Khushi which was later remade to several languages including Hindi with the same title. The movie was the highest grosser of year 2000 and all its songs were year’s top chart busters too. Earlier Jyothika made a special appearance in Vaali, the movie directed by Surya where the lead roles were done by Ajith and Simran. Surya appeared as lead actor in 2004 movie ‘New’ opposite Simran, where A. R. Rahman remixed an old Tamil hit song, Thottaal poo malarum. The song made him a popular hero during this time. The film script was written, produced and directed by himself and the film earned over 1.1 crore rupees its opening day at the box office.
He was born on July 20, 1968 in Vasudevanallur near Thenkasi, Tamil Nadu. He completed graduation in physics at the Loyola College, Chennai. But he was interested in entertainment industry rather than continuing his studies. He spent 6 years in the industry under different directors before he made his debut movie. Surya's first film was Vaali (1999), with Ajith and Simran in the lead role. This thriller with Ajith playing double roles of brothers was a blockbuster hit.
Then the following year multi-lingual Kushi, was released and his most successful movie up to date. The movie was the top grosser of the year for both Tamil and Telugu, but a flop in Bollywood. All the three versions were directed by Surya. Jyothika was the central character of Tamil version, while Kareena Kapoor – the female lead of Bollywood and Bhumika Chawla in the Telugu version. As a director, his other movies are New, Anbe Aaruyire and the big budget project Puli with Pawan Kalyan in the lead. Pawan Kalyan has earlier worked with him in the Telugu version of Khushi. Surya was one of the judges on Vijay TV's hit show Jodi Number One.
