Sanjay Chhel Biography

Sanjay Chhel is a popular film director, screenwriter, dialogue writer and lyricist associated with Bollywood. As a film director, he is best known for the movies like Khoobsurat (1999) starring Urmila and Sanjay Dutt, which received good reviews from critics as well as audience. The movie marked his debut as a Bollywood director and gave a new image to the glamorous girl Urmila. He also wrote the memorable lyrics of that movie; either it is the romantic track ‘Mera ek sapna hai’ or the foot tapping number, ‘E Sivani’, sung by Sanjay Dutt. As a dialogue writer, he is best known for the early movies – Rangeela, Yes Boss, Khoobsurat etc.

Mostly known as a successful screenwriter and story writer of Bollywood, he was born to Chhel Vayeda, who has worked as art director and production designer in Bollywood. Sanjay started his career as a dialogue writer, later moved to screenplay and direction. His trademark one liners for movies have always earned him appreciation. As a screenwriter/dialogue writer, he is best known for the movies – Dil to bachcha Hai Jee, Kismat Konnection, Kachche Daage, Partner, Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa etc. He wrote the lyrics of many Bollywood movies like Khoobsurat, Krishna Cottage etc.

Making his directorial debut with Khooburat in 1999, Sanjay Chhel has later directed Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam (2008) and the Punjabi movie, Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi (2015). He wrote the script of the first venture of Dreamz Unlimited, a production company started by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza. The movie, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani – released in early 2000 was however a box office failure. He has written and director one television series - Hum Sab Baraati aired on ZEE TV in 2004.
