Sharmishta Roy Biography

Sharmishta Roy is an Indian film art director and production designer who works predominantly in Hindi cinema. She was born in Kolkata in the family of Krishna and Sudhendu Roy a noted production designer of Bimal Roy's films, like Sujata, Madhumati, and Bandini Of great film maker Vimal Roy and also for Yash Chopra with whom he worked in top movies like Silsila, Chandni. She is one of the three children of Roy family others being Sumona Roy and Krishnendu Roy.

Sharmishta Roy worked as assistant for her father before taking up the work in the field of direction as an independent art director. Incidentally, she is working as art director and production designer in Hindi cinema. Sharmishta Roy has won Filmfare Best Art Directior’ Award for 3 times for her work in Dil To Pagal Hai in 1998, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1999 and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2002, and a winner of the National Film Award for Best Production Design for Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities by M.F. Husain. Sharmishta Roy is also known for her art work in Kal Ho Naa Ho, Bunty Aur Babli and Veer-Zaara.

Her movies include Talaash, Jab Tak Hai Jaan 2012 as production designer and My Name Is Khan in 2010, Ta Ra Rum Pum in 2007, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna in 2006 and Salaam Namaste 2005 as art director but she has also done the job of a cinematographer in Dil To Pagal Hai in 1997. She has acted in Bunty Aur Babli and Meenaxi. Roy has worked with famous painter MF Hussain in Meenaxi : The Tale Of 3 Cities in 2004 as Art Director and Actor and Gaja Gamini in 2000 as Art Director.
