Shriram Lagoo Biography
Shriram Lagoo is an Indian film actor and theatre artist, who works most for Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi. He has worked in numerous movies as a character artist. He has appeared in more than 100 films and most of his roles include father, uncle, grandfather etc. He has performed in more than 40 plays and has directed about 20 Marathi plays as well. In 1978 he won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Hindi film Gharaonda. His autobiography is titled Lamaan. He is one of the leading theatre artist, post Indian independence.
Shreeram Lagoo was born in Satara, Maharashtra on November 16, 1927. His parents are Dr. Balakrishna Chintaman and Satyabhama Lagoo. He did his schooling in Bhave High School. Later he studied in Fergusson College and took MBBS from B.J. Medical College, Pune. His passion to theatre started while he was studying in medical college. He continued his dramatic activity through the group "Progressive Dramatic Association". He specialist in ENT and has also worked as ENT surgeon in Pune for 6 years. He has also gone to England and Canada for further studies.
Along with his practise, he occasionally worked for theatre. In 1969, he became a full time Marathi theatre actor. His debut play was "Ithe Oshalala Mrityu" written by Vasant Kanetkar. Later he appeared in many significant roles in Marathi cinema as well, attaining a legendary status. His noted Marathi movies include – Saamna, Simhasan, Pinjara and Khichadi. His wife, Deepa Lagoo is also a noted theatre, television and film actress. His noted Hindi movies include – Gandhi, Gazab, Hum Tere Ashiq Hain, Sadma, Souten, Ankahee, Hera Pheri, kitaab, Imaan dharma, Kinara, Tarang, Khuddaar, Ek Din Achanak, Inkaar, Chehre Pe Chehra, Laawaris, Kaamchor, Vidhata, Bullet, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Meera, Jurmana and Manzil. He has received Kalidas Samman in 1997, Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Smruti Pratisthan in 2006, ‘Punyabhushan’ Puraskar in 2007 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2010.
