Sriranjani Junior Biography
Sriranjani Junior was a south Indian actress of black and white era, who worked in Tamil and Telugu movies. She is known for highly emotional tear jerking movies in the era which was fully dominated by such roles. She was the younger sister of actress Sriranjani and that’s why she was known by the name Sriranjani junior. She was a part of the historic movie, Parasakthi (1952) which is better known as the debut movie of the legendary actor, Sivaji Ganesan. She played the lead actress role, but the younger sister Kalyani to three brothers. Sivaji played the role of Gunasekaran, the youngest of three brothers in this movie.
She was born in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh in 1927. Her real name is Mahalakshmi. Her elder sister Senior Sriranjani, already an established actress then, is better known as the first Telugu heroine to portray the role of mythological character, Sita. Like her elder sister, Mahalakshmi too expressed interest in acting in movies and she was encouraged by Chitrapu Narayana Murthy who gave her first film role through Bhishma in 1944 where she played a character role. She played supporting roles till 1949.
Gunasundari Katha marked her new beginning as a lead heroine. She was given this big opportunity by Kadiri Venkata Reddy, a legendary film maker of Telugu cinema. The movie was a huge success and established her as a leading heroine. She appeared in its Tamil version too, playing lead role. Chandraharam is her next major movie. She was paired opposite N.T. Rama Rao in this movie and actress Savitri played second lead. She retired from film industry in 1960.
