Srividya Biography

Srividya was a Chennai born Tamil actress who later concentrated towards Malayalam movies. She is considered to be one among the finest actresses of medieval age. Her most notable movies in Malayalam include Idavazhiyile pooche mindaa poocha, Venalil oru mazha, Irakal, Aadaminte vaariyellu, Ennennum Kannettante, Chattambi kavala, Rachana, Daivathinte vikrithikal, Avicharitham and Puzha. Apoorvaragangal is a good Tamil movie most remembered for the matured handling of the subject. It’s the debut movie of Rajnikanth too.  

She was the daughter of Tamil comedian Krishnamurthy and classical singer M. L. Vasanthakumari. She debut Tamil movies as a child actress through Thiruvarutchelvar in 1966 and entered Malayalam film industry through Kumara sambhavam in 1969. Tata manavudu is her Telugu debut movie. Velli vizhai, Noothrukku nooru and Sollathaan Ninakkirein are a string of Tamil hits during middle 70’s.  Apoorvaragangal turned out to be the turning point of her personal life. She fell in love with her co-star Kamal Hassan. Parents also approved their relationship, but due to some reasons, the relation didn’t take off. Just one or two days before her death, Kamal Hassan met her personally at the hospital where she died. Later she married George Thomas, an assistant director of Malayalam movies. She even changed her religion to Christianity to marry him. But due to personal differences they got separated and disputes over her property reached Supreme Court where she won the case. But before her death, she gave its lion share to charity organizations. During the last years of her life, she lived in the capital city of Kerala.

She is a trained classical singer too and has rendered her voice for a few movies like Amaran, Oru painkili katha, Ayalathe Sundari, Nangalude Kochu doctor, nakshatra thaaraattu etc. During middle 80’s we witnessed finest and matured performance of Srividya as an actress and her mother roles are remembered most. Her best movies include Meen, Kshemichu ennoru vaakku, Jnan ekanaanu, Poomukha padiyil ninneyum kaathu, Aagamanam, Thinkalaazcha nalla divas am, Anupallavi, Ayanam, Amme Narayana, Daivathe orthu, Vilkkaanundu swapnangal, Saayam sandhya, Vivahithare ithile, Jaalakam, aarante mulla kochu mulla, Ithiri neram othiri karyam and Geetham. During 90’s, her role as mother of Amala in the movie – Ente soorya puthrikku is remembered most. Her memorable roles of 90’s include Innale, Aniyathi pravu, Ezhuthachan, Palayam, Soorya puthran, Vachanam, Aaran Thampuran, Raja silpi, Nilgiri, Pavithram and Ayal katha ezhuthukayaanu. Her best Tamil movies include Manithan, Punnagai mannan, Kathalikku mariyade, Apoorva sahodarangal and Shakthi.
