Su. Thirunavukkarasar Biography
Su. Thirunavukkarasar is an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu, who currently serves as a secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) of the Indian National Congress. He was introduced to politics in 1977 by then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. G. Ramachandran. Since then he is fully active in state politics. He is a lawyer by profession, who entered state legislative assembly at the age of only 27. He was also elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He served as Tamil Nadu state minister from 1980 to 1987 in MGR’s cabinet, handling different portfolios. He has also got elected to Lok Sabha. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a brief period and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha.
He was born on 7 May 1949 in Theeyathoor, Pudukkottai district. He holds a Master’s of Arts and Bachelor of Law degree. He was introduced to politics in 1977 by then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. G. Ramachandran. Thirunavukkarasar was a lawyer by profession then, and MGR wanted a lawyer candidate for his first elections for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election in 1977 who most recently founded All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1972. Thus he became MLA at the age of 27, and was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, a position he held till 1980. It was his entry to politics.
Served as a cabinet minister during 1980-1987 period, he handled the portfolios - Industries, Excise and Handlooms. He got elected to Lok Sabha, and also served as Minister of Shipping, Telecommunication and Information Technology. He unsuccessfully contested in 2009 General assembly elections as well. A member of MGR Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam started in the year 2000, his party got merged to Bharatiya Janata Party in 2009. But since 2009, after general elections, he is associated with INC.
