Sudip Bandyopadhyay Biography
Sudip Bandyopadhyay is an Indian politician from West Bengal who currently serves as a Member of Parliament. TMC leader and a 4-term MP, he has been elected to Lok Sabha 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th general elections. He is a 4-term MLA too. A member of the Trinamool Congress political party, he represents the Kolkata Uttar constituency at parliament at present. He was earlier associated with Congress party. He is not free of controversies or corruption issues, and he has been accused in the Rose Valley chit fund scam in 2017, worth 17K Crore rupees. He was arrested after interrogation by CBI for his non co-operation in the investigation and alleged involvement in Ponzi firm Rose Valley Group.
Sudip Bandyopadhyay was born in the Murshidabad district in West Bengal on 10 December 1952. Behrampore is his hometown. He has been associated with Bengal’s regional party - Trinamool Congress since late 1990s. Before that he had a long-term relationship of two decades with Indian National Congress. After being actively involved with regional politics and serving 4 terms as an MLA, he later moved to national level politics and succeeded in this level as well. He has been associated with Indian National Congress during 1977-1998 and 2004-2008 too.
He got elected to Vidhan Sabha for the first time in 1987 representing Indian national congress. He got elected in the next two Vidhan Sabha elections conducted in 1996 and 1998, and thus he became fully active in state politics throughout 1990s. He joined TMC in 1998, and also successfully contested to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1998. During his third term as MP, he served as Minister of State, Health and Family Welfare during 13 July 2011 – 22 September 2012 under Pranab Mukherjee’s cabinet.
