Tarun Majumder Biography

Tarun Majumder is a famous film director of Bengali cinema known for depiction of Bengali culture and society. He is deeply inspired by literal works of great writers and make cinema based on them. Many great works of Bimal Kar, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay and Tarashankar Bandopadhyay have been brought alive on silver screen by Tarun’s masterpiece work. Though his name is not taken aside critically well acclaimed film makers like, Tapan Sinha, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak or Mrinal Sen, he has made his own space in Bengali cinema delivering successful movies one after the other. He has also used songs written and composed by Tagore in his movies. He was married to popular actress of Bengali cinema, Sandhya Roy though they parted later.

 

Tarun was born in Bogra, Bengal in 1931. He completed his education at Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta. His early films were credited to Yatrik - screen-name of the trio of directors Tarun Majumdar, Sachin Mukherji and Dilip Mukherji until 1963. Chaowa Paowa in 1959 and Palatak and Kancher Swarga in 1963 are the most noted movies of this trio. Later they pursued separate careers. In 1965, Tarun Majumdar made two films: Ektuku basha and Alor pipasha. Sandhya Roy was the leading heroine in both these movies, whom he married later. In 1967, Moushumi Chatterjee made her debut through the biggest hit of the year, Balika Vadhu directed by Tarun. In 1976 the same movie was remade to Hindi titled Balika Vadhu by the same director and received moderate success as well.

 

Blockbuster hits of Tarun in the later years include - Shriman Prithviraj, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa, Ganadevata, Dadar kirti, Poroshmoni and Apon amar apon. Dadar Kirti introduced introduced Debashree Roy and Tapas Paul to big screen. In the middle 1990’s, he took a temporary break from the industry and returned back with Alo in 2004. Bhalobashar Anek Naam and Chander Bari belonged to his second innings in Bengali cinema.
