Uma Biography
Uma, born as Uma Shankari Rajendra Babu is an actress who has worked in south Indian language movies. She is also a successful television actress of Tamil – Chikkamma and Valli are popular ones. She is the daughter of popular actress of yesterdays, Sumithra who has worked for both Malayalam and Tamil movies. Her father Rajendra Babu is a commercial director in Kannada films. Her younger sister, Nakshatra, has made her debut with the film Doo in 2011.
Uma debut Malayalam in the year 2000 with Dileep’s comic flick – Kuberan. The movie was well received in box office too. Later she continued working in a series of Malayalam movies of which Ee Snehatheerathu (2004) opposite Kunchacko Boban needs special mention. Though the movie was a flop, it’s remembered for the romantic song pictured on Uma in a unique way. It was through this song that she became a known face in Malayalam. Udayarnakiranangal sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and composed by her husband L. Subramaniam was a unique and rare combination and of course, one among the few songs sung by Kavita for Malayalam. She played the role of a student who is in love with her tuition teacher. She has also appeared in Malayalam movies like – Saphalam and Vasanthamalika.
Uma’s debut Tamil in the year 2000 with the movie – Veera nadai and Vanavil. She has worked in Sakthi Chidambaram's Kovai Brothers opposite Sibiraj. The movie was released in the year 2006 and she acted the role of Sathyaraj’s sister. She also appeared in Thodamaley in the same year where she acted alongside a set of newcomers. She acted in a couple of Telugu movies in the year 2001 – Ammo bomma and Navvuthu Bathakalira. Same years she appeared in Tamil romantic flick – Kathal pookkal which won National awards as well as state awards. Murali was the leading actor of the movie and Bharathiraja’s son – Manoj also played a good role.
It was rumoured that she was romantically linked with actor Prashanth during the making of their film Adaikalam though both denied the matter. She married software engineer H. Dushyanth in Bangalore on June 15, 2006 and left film world. A few of her Tamil movies are Vikadan, Manikanda, Amudhey, Selvam and Soori.
