Vaiko Biography
He was born in Kalingapatti, Tamil Nadu to a Telugu speaking Kamma Naidu family. He is known to be a supporter of the LTTE, a Tamil separatist movement, which is banned in more than 32 countries and was arrested for the same in 2002.
He has been in the Rajya Sabha for a long time now. Almost 18 years and has become a prominent second leader. He is nicknamed as ‘tiger of the parliament’ majorly for his good and sober manners. He is an avid supporter of the LTTE even though the organization has not saved face in countries across the globe. He gave a controversial speech supporting the LTTE against the POTA (prevention of terrorist activities act).
Vaiko was released from prison after MDMK split from the BJP and joined hands with the congress after the emphatic win in the polls. Later in 2008 officials of the Tamil Nadu Police, ‘Q’ branch arrested MDMK general secretary, Vaiko and Kannappan on charges of sedition. The charges came up from the speeches that Vaiko made at a meeting of the party on the Sri Lankan separate Tamil state and government raids into LTTE areas. He was ready to pick up arms and fight for Tamils in Sri Lanka.
He has also been in the news, for good reasons this time. He is one of the forefront members in social work for the MDMK party. Carrying out various social works like blood donation through the ‘blood donors club’ run by the MDMK. He also was an active part of the ‘tank de-silting program’ loading soil into tractors himself. Another contribution to society being the free medical camps for the under privileged.
