Vijayasree Biography

Vijayasree was a popular heroine of Malayalam cinema in the 1970s. A fashion icon known for her super figure, this gorgeous heroine of Malayalam was regarded as an iconic beauty of silver screen then, also known by the title - Marilyn Monroe of Malayalam. Often regarded as a sex symbol she had huge male fan followers and admirers, and is still regarded as the most beautiful actress of Mollywood screen. She is given the equal status of actor Jayan, who was regarded as the iconic handsome actor of Malayalam screen who died very young. Unfortunately she had a short career span of four years and she shocked the cine viewers when she committed suicide at the age of only 21. She was facing a constant blackmailing from the film director Kunchakko, which prompted her to take this big step.

 

In the short period of time, she worked with all leading heroes and frequently worked with Kunchakko movies. It was rumoured that Kunchako with the support of his brother Navodaya Appachan murdered Vijayasree. But after the death of Vijayasree, Kunchako's Udaya Studios also faced huge losses. Vijayasree was frequently paired with evergreen hero Nazir. In the short career span of 4 years since early 1970s, she played worked in Angathattu,Postmane Kananilla,Lanka Dahanam,Maravil Thirivu Sookshikkuka,Pacha Nottukal,Taxi Car, Aromalunni  and Ponnapuram Kotta.

 

Even after 40 years of her death, she still stays in film lovers’ hearts as Marilyn Monroe of Malayalam. No other Malayalam heroines have enjoyed such a status, and she had most number of male admirers too. Once the highly acclaimed director Bharathan, known for capturing the beauty of heroines of silver screen commented that Vijayasree is the most beautiful woman he has ever met. She last appeared in Ponnapuram Kotta released in 1973 and the movie was directed by Kunchakko who caught some accidental nude clips of Vijayasree during a bath scene song 'Valliyoor Kaavile'. Later the director blackmailed her using those clips and Vijayasree ended her life.

 

She was born in Manacaud, Thiruvananthapuram in 1953. Tamil film Chitthi (1966) marked her acting debut. Poojapushpam (1969) directed by Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair marked her Malayalam film debut. In a short career span of 4 years, she also acted in Hindi and Telugu language films. A contemporary of the popular Malayalam actress Jayabharathi, she rose to fame through a series of movies opposite Prem Nazir which became huge box office hits.
