Gautam Sarabhai Biography
Gautam Sarabhai was an industrialist and businessman from Ahmedabad belonging to the prestigious Sarabhai industrial family. Many of his family members established themselves in different fields and earned success and fame. Ambalal Sarabhai, Vikram Sarabhai, Mrinalini Sarabhai, Mallika Sarabhai, Anasuya Sarabhai, Kartikeya Sarabhai, Revanta Sarabhai and Mridula Sarabhai are among other famous members of Sarabhai business family, associated with the fields of arts, business, politics etc. Gautam was born to industrialist Seth Ambalal Sarabhai and Sarladevi, and his father was one of the leading industrialists in British India.
Gautam Sarabhai was born into a rich business family of Ahmedabad, with many of them related to arts and science fields too. He was one among the eight kids of Ambalal Sarabhai and Sarladevi. He was born on 4 March 1917 as the fifth child of the couple. He is the brother of Vikram Sarabhai, famous Indian scientist. World famous dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai is his sister-in-law. Kartikeya Sarabhai is the son of celebrated couple, Vikram Sarabhai and dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai. He is the uncle of Mallika Sarabhai - an activist and classical dancer and Kartikeya Sarabhai - an environmental educator from Ahmedabad. He was married to Kamalini and had two daughters.
Gautam Sarabhai followed the footsteps of his forefathers and got into business field. He joined Calico in 1940 as a director at the age of 22. From there on, he got fully active in the field of family business. After death of his elder brother Surhid Sarabhai in 1945, he headed the industrial institutions founded by his father. Chemicals and pharmaceuticals, plastics and fibres, textiles and mills etc are some of the areas he primarily focussed on. With the help of his sister Gira, he was instrumental in setting up National Institute of Design. The group suffered a setback in 1980s due to family feud. He passed away in 1995.
