Kunal Kohli Biography

Kunal Kohli is a successful director of Bollywood at present. He is a film producer as well. He has directed only 5 movies till now, in the past 11 years. Two of them became hits while the rest three were flops. Yet his name is always counted among the celebrated film makers of today, as he has used only leading actors for his movies. Hit top hits are Hum Tum and Fanaa while the rest three movies that flopped at box office are his debut movie – Mujhse dosthi karoge, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Teri meri Kahani.  Kunal has produced 3 movies as well – Break ke baad which received moderate success and two flops directed by himself - Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Teri meri Kahani. He is always remembered for Hum tum and Fanaa. His films mostly appear under Yashraj Films banner. Hum Tum has won five Filmfare awards in the year 2004 including Best Director for Kunal Kohli.  

He has casted leading actors like Aamir Khan, Hritik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor in these 5 movies. It’s also to be noted that rani Mukherjee has been the leading actress of three of these movies. He also owns the credit of giving the first solo hit to Saif Ali khan after 10 years since his debut and this movie gave him National award for the best actor as well. After this movie, Saif’s career has always noticed uplift and now he is one among the top actors of the industry.

During late 90’s Kunal Kohli was a film critic. Ha has also hosted the show Chalo Cinema on Zee TV. His first experience in direction was through music videos. He was the video director of hit musical albums like Mera Laung Gawacha, Oh jaane jaana of Kamal Khan, Jaane kisne of Shaimik Devar, Yeh hai prem starring Abbas and Preety, Tere Bin Jeena Nahin of Bali Brahmabhat and Bole Humse Kuch Na Gori of Hema sardesai. He directed about 24 music videos before entering television and movies.

His debut movie starred Hritik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee in leading roles. Though the idea was fresh, the movie flopped at box office. However his second attempt (Hum tum) was a hit, as it was for the first time in Indian screen that cartoon characters have been made a part of the movie.
