Rajeev Chandrasekhar Biography
Rajeev Chandrasekhar is an active politician and entrepreneur born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He now serves as an independent member of the Rajya Sabha for the second term and represents Karnataka and Bangalore Urban Constituency. Rajeev is the founder chairman of Jupiter Capital and founder of BPL Mobile, a major mobile phone service provider in India. He also owns several business entities.
Rajeev was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on 31 May 1964. He was born to Indian Air Force Officer, Air Commodore M. K. Chandrasekhar and Valli Chandrasekhar. His schooling was done at different cities and he enrolled for electrical engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology in 1981. But he discontinued his studies in the middle to work for Softech, a start-up IT firm. In 1985 he took Master’s degree in Computer science from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, followed by the Advanced Management Program from Harvard University. He then joined Intel and once returned, he got married to Anju Chandrasekhar in 1991.
In 1994, Rajeev founded BPL Mobile, which became a major mobile phone service provider around 1995 when Rajeev entered politics. He founded Jupiter Capital in 2005, with an initial investment of US$100 million. Now its total assets have crossed US$800 million. He was awarded the 2007 IIT Global Service Alumni Award by the IIT Alumni Association for his contributions to the development of IT field in India. In April 2013, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.
He was elected to Parliament for the first time in 2006, where he stood as an independent candidate. In April 2012, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for a second six year term as an Independent candidate from Bangalore. Throughout his career, he has served many top positions in Indian business field.
