Victor Banerjee Biography
Victor Banerjee is an Indian actor who works in Hindi, Bengali and English movies. He most frequently appears in offbeat movies like Jogger’s Park, My brother … Nikhil and It Was Raining That Night. He has worked in English movies with prominent directors like David Lean, Roman Polanski, James Ivory and Jerry London. He has also worked with top Indian directors like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, and Ram Gopal Varma. He is a politician also and has won from West Bengal 4 times. He won from BJP party for the terms, 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2004 from Jadavpur constituency.
Victor’s birth name is Partha Sarathy Banerjee and he was born on 15 October 1946 at Kolkata. He is a descendent of Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee, a leading intellectual and first president of the Indian National Congress (1885). His schooling was done at St. Edmund's, Shillong, and graduation from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. English literature was his subject. In 1984, through the movie, A Passage to India directed by David Lean brought him international exposure. He received nomination at BAFTA award for this role in 1986. Same role gave him two international awards - Evening Standard British Film Award and National Board Review, USA. Hullabaloo Over Georgie , Shatranj Ke Khiladi and Ghare Baire (both directed by Satyajit Ray) and Mahaprithivi are his working experiences with leading directors of the time. He played the role of Jesus in York Mystery Plays directed by Steven Pimlott.
He gives equal preference to Bollywood and Bengali movies nowadays. He has also been associated with social issues like - human rights and labor issues. He has also campaigned for the creation of Uttarakhand in a speech entitled "Uttarakhand: A People Denied". He has also been associated with Bharathiya Janatha Party and won assembly elections 4 times from Bengal.
