Yash Chopra Biography
Yash Raj Chopra was an Indian film director and producer who worked in Hindi film industry. He started his career in film industry in 1959 and was active for more than five decades until his death.
Yash Raj Chopra was born on 27th September 1932 in Lahore in Punjab in British India. He is the youngest of eight children and was brought up by his second brother Baldev Raj Chopra. He completed his schooling at Doaba College at Jalandhar and then came to Ludhiana in Punjab after the Indian partition. He wanted to continue his career in engineering. But that did not materialize and started to work as an assistant director of I.S. Johar.
The film Dhool Ka Phool in 1959 marked his directorial debut. His directorial ventures at the initial stage turned out to be great success and he started to produce many movies with his brother B.R. Chopra. In 1973, he started his own film production company Yash Raj Films and produced many successful movies in seventies and eighties.
It was through his film Deewar in 1975 that Amitabh Bachchan came to limelight. His company Yash Raj Films became the biggest production company in 2006. He has won many awards for his film direction. He was also honored with Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan Award for his excellence in film industry by the Government of India.
He married Pamela Yash Chopra and has two children Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra. Aditya is a film director and producer and Uday is also a director who has also acted in few films.
Some of the films he has produced include Daag: A Poem of Love, Deewar, Darr, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Mohabbatein, Dil To Pagal Hai, Dhoom, Chandni, Mashaal, Nakhuda, Kaala Pathar, Noorie, Saathiya, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Yeh Dillagi, Ek Tha Tiger, Ishaqzaade, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, etc.
The films with romance with melodies and emotional and heroine oriented styles came to be known as Yash Chopra style. His film Lamhe in 1991 starring Sridevi and Anil Kapoor won five Filmfare Awards. His movie in 1993 titled Darr was the debut movie of Shah Rukh Khan.
His last film was Jab Tak Hai Jaan in 2012. He was planning to take make a trip to Switzerland with Shahrukh Khan and Katrina for shooting a scene. But unfortunately he was affected by dengue fever and the trip was cancelled. He was admitted in Lilavati Hospital at Mumbai and was found to have kidney ailments also. He did not recover from his illness and died on 21st October 2012.
